Chateau de Lamarque 2016, Haut Medoc, Bordeaux, France
£43.00
This comes from our visit to Bordeaux in 2014, where Pierre Gilles Gromand d’Evry is the seventh generation of his family making delicious Cru Bourgeois claret at his 11th Century mediaeval castle, just outside Margaux. Being of noble descent, his wing of the family was the only one to survive the guillotine during the French Revolution as his ancestor happened to be at sea fighting pirates. Wines are stored in the cellars converted from Mediaeval prisons, still populated by bats. He and his wife, the elegant Marie-Helene are absolutely devoted to making a wine that can challenge the local Grand Cru Classes. We think they succeed, not least as a result of a fierce determination to ensure only the highest quality grapes make it to the press, ensuring by the way that the wine can be enjoyed relatively early for a good quality Bordeaux.
