An advantage of travelling just a little south of the main Cote D’Or is that the wines – reds in particular – can be delightfully appealing at a relatively young age, and without the reputational baggage that accompanies their cousins further north. This Mercurey is just such an example – black cherry and blueberry fruit yet elegant and with a note of richness that comes from the age of the vines. The Chateau belonged to the first Dukes of Burgundy – the ones who banned the use of Gamay in Burgundy; this, naturally, is a Pinot noir….
